Roofing Installs & Process

After you have chosen a shingle type and color, we can begin the process of drafting a contract.

1. At this point, all the work will be on our end. While we ready the contract for your signature, we will also be arranging the other details necessary for completing your roof. We’ll obtain a material list from our wholesale supplier, secure a permit from your local building department, and draft a work order containing details for your specific roofing project.
2. Upon completion of the contract, we’ll send it to you for review and signature. Once you have signed the contract, the work can begin. Together we’ll set the date to begin the job. Once we have a date, we can order the materials and the dumpster and have them sent to your house.
3. There’s no need to be home if you have other plans though, because the delivery men will already have received any specific details necessary for unloading the materials. The materials usually arrive a day or two before or very early on the day the job begins, and the delivery men can unload most of them right onto the roof, evenly distributing the weight over the whole roof. Rather than ask for half down payment of the contract price upon the signature of the contract, we do not require any payment from you until the materials are on your roof.
4. The dumpster will usually arrive on the morning the job begins. We use rubber wheel or roll off dumpsters with wood planks underneath to ensure that no damage is done to your driveway, and a full dumpster usually weighs about the same as a regular vehicle. The work crew will usually arrive between 8 and 9 a.m., and the job can begin.
5. Once the job has started, the same crew will be there every day until the job is finished. The crew begins by tearing off the old roof down to the wood decking. A lot of noise and mess occurs at this point, but we make certain to cover any landscaping or decks with tarps to eliminate damage. If possible, we try to carry all roof debris right to the dumpster from your roof. While your roof is uncovered, the crew will make sure the decking is sound. If we run into mold or any other unexpected issue, we inform you immediately so that we can discuss your options for addressing that issue. Such unforeseen decking problems, however, are rare. The crew also makes certain not to leave for the night without making sure that all sections of the roof uncovered during the day are shingled or at the very least watertight.
6. As the process continues, our standard is to install six feet of ice and water barrier around the eaves and valleys of your roof. Although the required building code is two feet past the inside wall, we like to take extra precautions against leaks during the heavy snowfall of most Michigan winters. The rest of the roof decking is covered with synthetic underlayment, so your entire roof is protected beneath the shingles. We also install adequate ventilation specifically for your roof layout. Proper air flow is essential. Shingling your roof can be a noisy business, but the fuss is well worth the results. 7. When your roof is completed to your satisfaction, we’ll give you an invoice for the other half of your contract price. If you have any questions or comments, we’d love to hear them then.
